Beatitudes for Nurturing Missionary Vocations in the Family
amilies
are the primary source of Vocations. It
is in the family where the practice of faith is impressed upon young people and
where attitudes toward life are formed. I
ask parents, then, to recognize the need to teach your children to make choices
grounded in Gospel Values.” (Bishop
Joseph L. Imesch)
Family Vocation Prayer
Loving God,
Each member of our family is a special gift from You.
You have given each of us gifts and talents
So that we may enjoy life
But also share it with others.
Generous women and men are needed for service,
Leadership and mission in our church
Throughout the world.
Help us know how to encourage and support each other
So we may respond generously to this need
By reaching out to the poorest in our world,
By our witness, by sharing our faith with joy,
And by recognizing Your presence in all peoples.
We know that You will be with us.
Help us to trust in You and in each other.
Amen
Parents have such a unique and wonderful opportunity for planting the seeds of Vocation and Mission in the home! Their educational role must address the essential question of choosing a vocation, and encouraging children to find and respond to the personal call that God sends forth.
It becomes an evangelical necessity for parents to create a hope atmosphere of discovery where the family is the vital clearinghouse to help kids find God’s plan, then faithfully accept God’s design as it gradually develops through life.
We may say that Vocations are “home-made.” The family is in fact a community of life and love, often called the “school of love.” So, we say:
Blessed
indeed are the children of parents who…
witness love for their spouse, their children, their neighborhood and the world;
talk freely about the presence of God in the joys and sorrows of their lives.
Remind their children… of the life of the children around the world.
Lead their family in prayer and service of the poor.
Speak positively about all Church ministries.
Show interest and respect of other cultures and faith traditions.
Share the stories of Christian communities from around the world.
Participate in the ministries and activities that promote life, freedom, human rights, and dignity.
Encourage their children to consider mission service.
Educate and show their sons and daughters how to “Think globally and act locally.”
