Oct. 25, 1999

Bishop Biguzzi of Sierra LeoneBishop George Biguzzi receives Cuore Amico Awardhis past October, the prize “Cuore Amico,” the Nobel prize awarded to missionaries by an Italian committee, went to Bishop George Biguzzi, the Xaverian Ordinary of Makeni, Sierra Leone.  The award gives recognition to Bishop Biguzzi’s unceasing pastoral activity and his constant pursuit to mediate peace between the warring parties which, besides tearing the country asunder, have been responsible for unheard atrocities against the civilian population.  The awarding of the prize to a missionary in Africa focuses also on the hope in the heart of the vast, yet tottering continent.

On October 18, rebels in Sierra Leone freed Bishop Biguzzi, who three days before had been kidnapped with two priests and a dozen humanitarian workers, said MISNA, a Rome-based missionary news agency.
