been many years since I started serving at Santa Cruz, our mission among the
Indians “Nahuatl”, in Mexico. First
I learned their language, their culture and their religiosity in order to
correctly communicate the Good News of Jesus.
It took several years for us to prepare the first translations of the Gospel in the Nahuatl language. The first time the Indians heard it in their own language there was a great joy. They said: “Now it is our word. God talks to us in the same language of our ancestors.”…
Certainly, one of the characteristics of the Nahuatl people is the importance of living always in community. The Indian alone, as an individual does not exist. It is the community, the family, the village that gives meaning and purpose to life. This agrees very much with our faith. In fact, we know how the first Christian communities had everything in common.
My experience among the Nahuatl has been that of discovering those “seeds of the Gospel” present in other cultures.
