1961 - Dag Hammarskjold, second Secretary General of the United Nations, and 1961 Peace Nobel, dies in a plane crash in the Congo while on a peacekeeping mission.

National Catechetical Sunday: Celebrated the third Sunday of September, Catechetical Sunday is set aside as a time to recognize the essential ministry of the Church.
