Children perform dances during Lunar New Year Celebrations of Seven Baptisms at Easter

his year has been a grace-filled year, as seven catechumens are welcomed into the Catholic Church at St. Therese in Chinatown. It’s indeed a record. Some of them are well known in the community, since they have been long-time friends and sympathizers. Fr. Michael remarks: "We celebrated the Baptisms, Confirmation and Eucharist of seven adult catechumens at St. Therese in Chinatown, Chicago. Certainly, these are not the numbers I used to have at Holy Cross in Freetown, Sierra Leone, but I believe they are miracles of God’s Grace. Here, we don’t fish with nets, but we use fishing poles! The parish community has followed their journey with prayer, which was intensified during the Scrutinies of Lent. We look at these neophytes as precious gifts of the Lord, whom we want to protect and accompany in their growth. We did not only highlight the right understanding of Church’s disciplines and rules, but also on their personal conversion and service to the Church. Each of them has chosen either an activity or a group within the parish so that they exercise their “kingly priesthood” in the service of the Ecclesial community."
These are their names: Xiu Ping Huang (Therese), Oi Lin Chan (Mary), Eugene Kwan (Eugene), John Moy (John), Daniel Bin Ng (Daniel), Richard May (Richard), Duo Han (Dulas)

Lunar New Year at St. Therese

unday Feb. 10th saw the celebrations of “Lunar New Year” at St. Therese Church, with concelebrated Eucharist, the traditional Dragon Dance, the rite honoring the ancestors, fireworks outside of the church, and the usual dinner and entertainment by the children of the school, in the newly remodeled basement of St. Therese. There was a great participation of people, joyfully welcoming the “Year of the Rat.”

  School Fundraiser very successful

n the following Saturday, Feb. 16th, another big event fundraiser for St. Therese School was held at Furama Restaurant, with lots of attendees and all the grades of the school represented performing different sketches, dances and shows welcoming the Lunar New Year. There are over 500 brilliant photos on the web, if you can withstand them all, of these two important events in the life of St. Therese School and Parish. Please, check them out at http://emphotography.fotki.com/st-thereses-lunar-n/

Suharno, Francois, Valery and Fr. Marcos with Dimitri and his family at the baptism at St. Therese Chinatown World Mission Sunday celebration

orld Mission Sunday is always a great event that involves parishioners and children at St. Therese Mission church in Chinatown. It was a grand style celebration, prepared week after week through the month, traveling as a journey, from one Continent to the other, Sunday after Sunday. The school children got involved with it, and the community of faith remembered in prayer the missionaries that had worked at St. Therese, and all missionaries who are now in far-away places. The baptisms of two children gave St. Therese Church the possibility of renewing the baptismal promises and its missionary dedication. In the photo above, pictured are Dimitri (who received baptism) with his parents, Suharno, François, Valery and Fr. Marcos.

Reflection on the 27th North America Chinese Convention

Chinese Youth participants at the Chinese Convention in Chicago, ILIt was indeed a busy weekend on May 24-27 for participants and steering committee of the North America Chinese Convention, gathered at Mundelein, IL.  Many participants as you can see from the group photo, and lots of energy transmitted to the Convention by youth, religious, priests and laity from many part of the world, who work in close relationship with Chinese communities of faith.  Fr. Michael Davitti reflects on the talks, the challenges, and the work to be done so that everyone shares the Joy of Evangelization with Chinese Youth here in this country and abroad.  Read this two part article, included are some photos, and reflect on the question provided at the end.  With deep appreciation to Fr. Michael and all those who made this convention a real success.  A reflection from Fr. Michael Davitti on the 27th North America Chinese Clergy, Religious and Laity Convention at Mundelein, IL - May 24-27 2007
